Today it may be difficult to see many differences between ambulatory surgery centers and inpatient settings. Increasingly, ambulatory venues are providing more complex procedures to patients with higher acuity levels. Because of these factors and others, the patient safety and professional liability risks in ambulatory surgery are changing and need to be closely monitored. Informed Consent continues to be an element in medical malpractice claims. Obtaining consent is sometimes delegated to someone other than the person performing the procedure; it is sometimes reduced to obtaining a signature on a piece of paper. This program will highlight the current liability trends in ambulatory centers and an overall view of best practices for obtaining a patient’s consent.
